Watch the Salmon Leaping!
The Falls of Shin is known for being one of the best places in the UK to spot salmon in their natural habitat.
For many years people have been visiting the Falls of Shin to watch the spectacular display of salmon leaping up the falls as they desperately try to reach their spawning grounds.
Although salmon can be seen at various times throughout the year you are most likely to see them between May – September.
There is a viewing platform above the falls which is less than a five-minute walk from the car park, with fine views of the River Shin, a popular fishing destination.
The path to the viewing platform is accessible with a pushchair but due to the gradient it is less accessible for wheelchairs.
For people who are unable to reach the viewing platform there is a ‘Rivercam’ in the Restaurant.
The salmon’s journey
Every year throughout the summer months the salmon return from the sea to spawn. They have swum up the Dornoch Firth and the Kyle of Sutherland to return to the river that they were spawned in. However, in order to reach their birthplace upstream in the River Shin they have to pass the torrent of water at the falls. They leap against the current, often jumping completely out of the water. Some make it first time and can continue their journey while others have to try over and over again.

In the surrounding mixed woodland, beautiful walking routes have been created by Forestry and Land Scotland.
Whether you prefer a vigorous walk or a more relaxing stroll to spot the local wildlife – there are three different paths to suit your mood. Some of the trails have games to keep the children amused too!
